About Milan & Lombardy

Milan is Italy's design and fashion capital, and Lombardy, the region around it, holds some of the country's most historic and least internationally known cities within an hour or 2 of the center. The Essenza Escapes collection here works around two very different bases: an apartment in Milan for the city itself, or a villa or apartment on Lake Como for the water and the mountains an hour to the north. From either, Renaissance Mantua, violin-making Cremona, the walled upper town of Bergamo, and the wine hills of Franciacorta are within reach for a day out, each seeing a fraction of the tourist traffic of Florence or Rome.

How to Get to Milan & Lombardy

Milan Linate Airport (LIN) is the closest to the city, approximately 10km / 6 miles from the center, roughly 20 to 25 minutes by car. It handles primarily domestic and European flights and is the most convenient airport for guests staying in Milan itself.

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) is the region's main international gateway, approximately 50km / 31 miles from Milan, roughly 50 minutes by car. Most long-haul flights arrive here, and it is also convenient for guests heading to Lake Como.

Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY, also known as Orio al Serio) is approximately 50km / 31 miles from Milan, roughly 50 minutes to 1 hour by car, and is the main hub for budget carriers. It sits only 5km / 3 miles from Bergamo itself, roughly 15 minutes by car, making it a convenient arrival point for guests heading straight to that city.

Milano Centrale is one of Italy's principal rail hubs, with high-speed trains reaching Rome in approximately 3 hours, Venice in approximately 2.5 hours, Florence in approximately 1.75 hours, and Turin in approximately 1 hour, making Milan a practical base for guests planning to see more than one Italian city in a single trip.

Where to go in Milan & Lombardy

Milan
Italy's second-largest city pairs the Duomo, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world, with the Renaissance fresco of the Last Supper, the Sforza Castle, and a shopping and dining scene that runs from the Quadrilatero della Moda to the canal-side aperitivo bars of the Navigli district. Milan rewards a longer stay than most guests initially plan for it, particularly for those interested in design, contemporary art, or fashion.

Lake Como
An hour north of Milan, Lake Como is where many guests choose to settle for the region, in a villa or apartment along the shore with the mountains rising straight from the water. The lakeside towns of Bellagio, Menaggio, and Varenna sit within a short boat ride of one another, and the gardens of the grand lakeside villas are among the finest in Italy. It gives guests a complete change of pace from the city while keeping Milan, Bergamo, and Franciacorta close enough for a day out.

Bergamo
Bergamo's Citta Alta, the walled upper town reached by a funicular from the modern lower city, is one of Lombardy's most complete medieval and Renaissance centers, with the Piazza Vecchia and the Carrara Academy's art collection among its highlights. It sees far fewer visitors than comparable hilltowns in Tuscany or Umbria, despite being less than an hour from Milan.

Mantua (Mantova)
A UNESCO World Heritage city built almost entirely by the Gonzaga family over 3 centuries, Mantua holds the frescoed Palazzo Ducale and the Palazzo Te, with Giulio Romano's illusionistic Sala dei Giganti among the finest Renaissance interiors in Italy. Surrounded on 3 sides by artificial lakes formed from the Mincio River, the city has a quietly dramatic setting that few guests anticipate.

Cremona
The historic center of Italian violin-making, where the workshops of Stradivari and Amati established a tradition that continues today in dozens of working luthier studios open to visitors. The Piazza del Comune, with its Romanesque cathedral and the Torrazzo, one of Italy's tallest medieval towers, anchors a compact and rewarding old town.

Pavia and the Certosa
South of Milan, Pavia is a historic university town built on the Ticino River, with a covered medieval bridge and a skyline of tall brick towers that once rivaled Bologna's. Just outside the city, the Certosa di Pavia is one of Italy's most elaborate Carthusian monasteries, its facade a dense catalog of Renaissance sculpture.

Franciacorta
East of Milan toward Lake Iseo, the rolling hills of Franciacorta produce Italy's leading sparkling wine, made using the traditional method and widely considered a genuine rival to Champagne. The area's estates offer some of Lombardy's most rewarding wine tastings, and its pace is closer to Piedmont or Tuscany than to the city an hour away.

When to go to Milan & Lombardy

The best time to visit Milan and Lombardy depends on what you are looking for, but April, May, September, and October are the most comfortable for the city and the historic towns, while July and August are the height of the season on Lake Como.

Spring brings mild temperatures to Milan's streets and Lombardy's countryside alike, with the region's design calendar, including Milan Design Week in April, filling the city. Summer is warm, and while the middle of the day in Milan is best spent in the museums and churches, this is when Lake Como is at its finest, with the water warm for swimming and the lakeside towns at their liveliest; the city grows quieter through August as locals head to the coast and the mountains, which gives it a calmer, more local feel. September brings Milan Fashion Week and a return to the city's full energy, alongside excellent weather for the smaller towns. Autumn continues into October with mild temperatures well suited to Mantua, Cremona, and Bergamo, and the Franciacorta harvest adds a seasonal dimension to wine visits. Winter is cold and often foggy in the Po Valley, though Milan itself stays fully active year-round, including the opera season at La Scala from early December.

Why Visit Milan & Lombardy

No other Italian region pairs a genuinely world-class city with so many overlooked historic towns within such easy reach, or with a lake as celebrated as Como an hour from its center. A guest can spend days in Milan among world-class design, fashion, and contemporary art, then reach Bergamo, Mantua, Cremona, or Pavia in under 2 hours, each offering a different and largely uncrowded slice of Italian history. That combination, a major international city alongside genuine day-trip depth and the option of the lake, is not something Rome, Florence, or Venice can offer in quite the same way. Value varies by location: Milan itself carries city pricing comparable to other major European capitals, while the surrounding towns and Franciacorta's countryside are considerably more affordable.

The food and drink reflect the region's wealth and its agricultural land in equal measure. Risotto alla Milanese, saffron-scented and rich with bone marrow, and cotoletta alla Milanese, a breaded veal cutlet, anchor Milan's own table, while Cremona's torrone and mostarda, Mantua's pumpkin-filled tortelli, and Bergamo's polenta and game dishes each reflect centuries of distinct local tradition packed into a small area. Franciacorta's sparkling wines and the plains around Parma and Piacenza just to the south supply some of Italy's finest cured meats and cheeses to Milan's tables.

Milan runs on relationships and access, from its ateliers to its most famous fresco, and the Essenza Escapes network here is built on both. Private viewings of the Last Supper timed to avoid the standard queue, access to Franciacorta estates that do not otherwise offer public tastings, a driver for the day who can take in Bergamo's Citta Alta and a Franciacorta lunch on a single itinerary, and introductions to the ateliers and showrooms that make Milan's design and fashion world function. Whether guests base themselves in a Milan apartment or a villa on Lake Como, the Essenza Escapes network spans the city and the region around it, built to help guests see Lombardy as more than a single-city visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to visit Milan & Lombardy for a villa holiday?

April, May, September, and October are the most comfortable months for the city and the historic towns, with mild temperatures and the region at an easy pace. July and August are the height of the season on Lake Como, with warm water and lively lakeside towns, while Milan itself grows quieter through August and takes on a calmer, more local feel. Winter is cold and often foggy across the Po Valley, though Milan stays fully active year-round, including the opera season at La Scala from early December. Essenza Escapes can advise on timing depending on whether you are prioritizing the city, the lake, or the surrounding towns.

Which airports serve Milan & Lombardy, and how far are they from the villas?

Milan Linate (LIN) is closest to the city center, roughly 20 to 25 minutes away, and handles mostly domestic and European flights. Milan Malpensa (MXP) is the region's main international gateway, roughly 50 minutes from Milan and convenient for Lake Como. Milan Bergamo (BGY) is a similar distance from Milan but sits only 15 minutes from Bergamo itself, making it convenient for guests heading there directly. Essenza Escapes can arrange private transfers from any of these airports.

Do I need a car to explore Milan & Lombardy?

A car is not necessary within Milan itself, where the metro, trams, and walking cover the city center efficiently, but it becomes useful for reaching Bergamo, Mantua, Cremona, Pavia, and Franciacorta at a comfortable pace. On Lake Como a car is handy for the shore roads, though the lake ferries connect the main towns without one. High-speed rail also links Milan directly to several of these towns and is often the more practical choice for a single day trip without the hassle of city parking. Essenza Escapes can arrange car hire or a private driver from any Italian airport.

When do tickets for Milan's major sites go on sale, and can Essenza Escapes help me get them?

The Last Supper is the clearest example: viewing slots hold only a small number of people at a time and are released in blocks a set period ahead, then sell out within minutes of going live, often weeks before the date. The Duomo's rooftop and the city's headline exhibitions follow a similar pattern, with the best times going first. Essenza Escapes tracks the release windows and books the moment they open, so the visits at the heart of your trip are secured rather than left to chance. For the Last Supper in particular, this is often the difference between seeing it at all and missing it entirely.

Which historic towns near Milan are worth a day trip, and how far are they?

Bergamo's walled upper town is under an hour from Milan and pairs well with a half-day visit. Mantua and Cremona are each roughly 1.5 to 2 hours away and reward a full day, given the density of what each holds, while Pavia and the Certosa di Pavia are closer, around 45 minutes, and combine into a single half-day outing. From a Lake Como base, Bergamo and Franciacorta are the most natural day trips, with the southern towns better suited to a Milan stay. Essenza Escapes can arrange a private driver for any of these, timed around opening hours and lunch reservations.

Is Milan a good destination for design and fashion, and can Essenza Escapes arrange access beyond standard shopping?

Milan is Italy's design and fashion capital, home to the ateliers, showrooms, and the annual Salone del Mobile and Fashion Week calendar that shape the industry globally. Beyond the Quadrilatero della Moda's storefronts, the Essenza Escapes network includes introductions to showrooms and ateliers not generally open to the public, arranged for guests with a genuine interest rather than as a standard shopping itinerary. This kind of access is one of the most requested additions for guests staying in Milan specifically. Essenza Escapes can tailor the level of access to your interest, whether furniture design, fashion, or contemporary art.
